Wedding neon: sizes, words and timing

A neon sign at a wedding does three jobs: it sets the mood, it ends up in half the photographs, and it comes home with you afterwards. A little planning makes sure it does all three well.

What to write

The best wedding signs are short. Two or three words read from across a marquee and fit neatly in a photograph. Some favourites:

  • Your names, or “Mr & Mrs” with your surname underneath.
  • “Better together”, “Happily ever after”, “Till the last dance”.
  • A line from your first dance, a private joke, or the date.

You get up to three lines of 24 characters. Script lettering suits romantic phrases; a bolder face suits a modern venue or a long surname. Check the spelling twice, and then once more on the proof drawing: we make exactly what you approve.

How big to go

  • On a table or the cake table: roughly 60 to 80 cm wide, usually on a stand.
  • Above the top table: 100 to 120 cm, hung from chains on the backdrop or the wall.
  • As a backdrop for photographs: 150 to 200 cm, so it frames two people standing in front of it.

Anything over 2 m we quote for you, because very large signs need a closer look at how they’re hung and powered. The designer shows every size to scale.

When to order

Order about four weeks before the day. We send your proof drawing within 12 hours; once you approve it, your sign arrives 7–10 working days later, and that leaves a week spare for nerves and table plans. Weekends and UK bank holidays don’t count as working days.

Got a date in mind? “Need it by?” in the designer checks it against your postcode and tells you the latest day to approve your drawing. We don’t offer rush making, so if your date is tight, message us before you order and we’ll be straight with you about what’s possible.

Ask the venue three questions

  1. Can we fix anything to the walls? Many venues don’t allow screws. Chains on a backdrop frame, or a table stand, avoid the question entirely.
  2. Where is the nearest socket? The sign plugs into a normal socket. Bring a good extension lead and some tape to keep it tidy.
  3. Who will put it up? Venue coordinators and stylists hang signs all the time. Give them the box and point them at our installation guide.

Power on the day

Every sign runs from a normal socket through its power supply, so there is nothing to wire. On the day, the practical questions are where the cable runs and who switches it on. Tape the cable down where guests walk, hide the power supply (and the dimmer, if you added one) behind the backdrop or under the table, and give the remote to one person, usually the coordinator or the band. If the venue is outdoors or in a marquee, keep the sign and its power supply under cover and dry: our standard signs are made for indoor use.

Day and night

A wedding sign is seen in two lights: the afternoon, when it is switched off or competing with daylight, and the evening, when it comes into its own. The slider shows your words in a room both ways. It’s a rendered preview, but it gives an honest idea of how the off-state looks.

Try itDrag between day and night. Rendered previews of your own words.

Warm white photographs most naturally against skin tones and flowers. A mirror backing doubles the glow and looks beautiful in photos taken with a flash. Add the dimmer and remote in the designer and use them to bring the brightness down for the first dance so faces aren’t washed out.

A wedding sign checklist

  1. Decide the words and check the spelling with your partner.
  2. Measure the backdrop or wall and pick a size in the designer.
  3. Choose the hanging method the venue allows.
  4. Order about four weeks before, and approve the drawing promptly.
  5. Pack an extension lead and tape with the sign, plus the remote if you added the dimmer.
  6. Name one person to switch it on and dim it for the first dance.

After the day

It comes home with you. A wedding sign makes a lovely hallway, living room or bedroom sign, and with the optional dimmer it goes from dance floor to bedside. We don’t hire signs out; every one is made for you to keep, and every one comes with a 3-year warranty.

Your turn

Put your own words on the wall

Type your words, see them lit at true size and priced as you go. Nothing is made until you approve the drawing.
